Abstract
Classical statistical mechanics is formulated in terms of the characteristic function associated with a probability distribution in phase-space. Quantum statistical mechanics is formulated in terms of the hypercharacteristic function associated with an ensemble of Schrödinger wave functions. It is shown here that both probabilistic dynamical theories appear as special cases in the broader framework of a generalized statistical mechanics.
