Measles – a fire-fighting exercise
Journal of public health (Oxford, England), v 10(4), pp 341-343
Nov 1988
Abstract
The occurrence of a single case of measles in a closed or semi-closed community with a high proportion of vulnerable individuals must lead to consideration of a ‘fire-fighting’ intervention with measles vaccine. This paper describes such an exercise amongst a population of 24 adults and 49 children from 12 homeless families living in temporary hotel accommodation sponsored by a local council. The intervention was apparently successful in that no further cases of measles occurred in this highly vulnerable population. The circumstances also provided graphic illustration of the difficulties of bringing primary health care and preventive services to these socially deprived families.
