Abstract
Study examines ceramics of AlN-Al sub 2 O sub 3 -42 wt% TiN, differing in the AlN/Al sub 2 O sub 3 ratio. A correlation exists between wear resistance and K sub / Ic/ . Analysis of oxidation products reveals the formation of alpha -Al sub 2 O sub 3 and rutile at 600- 1100 degrees C and also AlTiO sub 3 above 1200 degrees . Spallation of the oxide layer causes low oxidation resistance of Al sub 2 O sub 3 -rich composites above 1250 degrees . Oxidation of the composites is compared with oxidation of pure TiN. The relationship is discussed between material properties, composition, phases, and processing parameters. 30 refs.
