Abstract
I. Introduction The 2008 Summer Olympics will be more than just a celebration that unites the world's nations in peaceful competition and unity. 1 The upcoming Olympic Games will convincingly illustrate that the Peoples' Republic of China (China) has emerged as an international power, or at least that is what China plans to demonstrate. Judging from the $ 23 billion budget 2 for the upcoming Beijing 2008 Olympics, China seemingly intends to use the money allocated for the Olympic Games to accelerate its already impressive progress toward technological and economic modernization. These improvements, along with a successful Beijing Olympics, could put the world on notice that China has made the leap from a developing nation, once dependant on support from more prosperous countries for a variety of necessities, into a global juggernaut that will no longer be dominated by the West. 3 China now appears ready to embrace its new role as a leader in the international economic market. China is expected to overtake the United States (U.S.) as the world's leading economy within thirty-five years. 4 Many experts, when considering the country's massive population and growing number of citizens with disposable income, consider China - going forward - to be the world's most attractive consumer market for sports properties. 5 According to China's official government website, the number of Chinese citizens participating in sports activities is increasing two percent annually. 6 With a population of over 1.3 billion people, 7 this two percent increase translates ...
