Abstract
An attempt is made to establish a quantitative correlation between acoustic emission and the actual initiation and growth of matrix splitting in double- edge notched unidirectional graphite/epoxy specimens. No direct corespondence between the actual damage and acoustic emission could be established based on the total emission accumulated during loading. It is recommended that emission caused primarily by grating be first separated and identified. This would lead to an excellent correlation between the initiation, accumulation, and rate of progression of actual damage and the emission attributed primarily to damage. (K.K.)
