Neurologic Examination and Functional Assessment after Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract
Accurate neurologic assessment of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) is important to document deficits, monitor the results of treatments, plan appropriate rehabilitation, and conduct research.The newly proposed international standards for the classification of the patient with SCI facilitates communication between centers and permits comparison of outcome and research data. Factors influencing neurologic recovery in the zone of injury as well as below the level of injury are presented. Functional expectations of SCI neurologic levels are described. Functional scales in SCI include the Modified Barthel Index, The Functional Independence Measure, and the Quadriplegia Index of Function. The Craig Handicap Assessment and Reporting Technique is a new tool for the quantification of handicap. Performance may differ from expectations, however. More widespread use of functional assessment measures in SCI treatment and research is needed to evaluate the practical benefits of therapeutic, pharmacologic, and surgical interventions.
