Abstract
Winding its way through the Appalachian foothills, the new river is among the wildest and most scenic rivers in the Eastern U.S. and is also the oldest river on the continent. The geology and natural environment of new river are described. While several proposals have been made to preserve new river, a huge, twin pumped-storage project for power production threatens the river. American electric and power Co. And the AFL-CIO have lobbied against a Bill to study the new river in North Carolina and Virginia for possible inclusion in the Nat'l wild and scenic rivers system.
