New Towns and Social Welfare Prospects: 1975-2000 A.D

Abstract
Despite the fact that 15 of the HUD aided new towns are floundering & near economic collapse--due to such factors as pressure for innovation without guaranteed cost-subsidy, bias & distrust of prospective residents, regional leaders, & politicians-- their proliferation is forecast over the next few decades. 3 major reasons are cited for the forecast increase: (1) increased demand will be made to accommodate new Americans & migrating Ru-Ur shifts, (2) these home-seekers will demand closer proximity to work, recreation, & shopping facilities due to continued energy squeezes, & (3) increased pressure for housing will boost prices for land, housing, & community planning. The halting development of new towns will explode as planners turn to these already initiated projects for development expertise & land use. The next 25 years will inevitably see a new town recovery.
