Abstract
Occult nodal metastasis is high in sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma.The maxillary sinus is the subsite with greatest risk of occult nodal metastasis.Elderly patients (>75 years) and those with lymphovascular invasion are at increased risk of occult nodal metastasis in sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma.
What is known and what is new?
The rate of clinical cervical lymph node metastasis increases in tumors with advanced T stage.These data support novel findings of significantly increased risk of occult nodal metastasis for high T stage, advanced patient age, lymphovascular invasion, and maxillary sinus subsite.
What is the implication, and what should change now?
Particular considerations should be made for elective neck dissection in patients with lymphovascular invasion present in primary tumors, advanced T stage of primary tumors, in patients with advanced age, or in tumors in the maxillary sinus.
