Nonreductive Materialism and the Materialisms of Marx and Heidegger
Human studies, v 5(1)
Dec 1982
Abstract
A reconsideration of the relationship between Marxism & existential-phenomenological sociology in light of J. Margolis's articulation & systematic defense of nonreductive materialism -- a material monist ontology that acknowledges an irreducible dualism of attributes (Persons and Minds: The Prospects of Non-Reductive Materialism, Boston, Mass: D. Reidel Publishing Co, 1978). It is argued that: (1) physicalism is an indefensible philosophical position, which is better replaced by a nonreductive materialist ontology; (2) that the most important reasons for thinking that Marxism entails physicalism are mistaken; & (3) that the existential phenomenological approach does not necessarily presuppose an ontic dualism. Martin Heidegger's Being and Time (Macquarrie, J. & Robinson, E. [Trs], New York: Harper & Row, 1962) is examined as an existentialist attempt at a nonreductive materialist ontology. Modified AA.
