Abstract
Sociology could profit considerably from new research attention to oral sexuality. Data from current large-scale postal surveys suggests a substantial increase in the number of Americans who include fellatio and cunnilingus in their sexual experience. Small-scale intensive interview research, however, raises serious doubts about whether usage is always accompanied by satisfaction gains: long-standing ambivalence and social taboos undermine attitudinal reforms. The mass media focuses unprecedented attention on the subject, but considerable contradictory opinions persist about it. Research possibilities are suggested, as is a case for sustained, systematic research.
