Abstract
Introduction Tanya and Dave were working together as partners in the child and family advocacy clinic I have been teaching for over a decade at Vanderbilt Law School. During the first three weeks of the semester, Tanya came to my office to ask whether she could be reassigned to a different partner. She did not really know Dave, but based upon what she had observed in other classes, she was concerned that their politics were simply "too different" and thought that perhaps they should not work together. Meanwhile, Helen, another clinic student, had a client who frequently called her and always seemed to be in a crisis. Helen was already feeling overwhelmed, especially given her work on the law review and the other responsibilities she was balancing with her clinical work. Yet another student, Robert, was struggling with how best to advocate on behalf of his client, a grandmother who was raising her four grandchildren after the sudden and tragic death of her daughter, the children's mother. His client was receiving support through the foster care system, but she wanted to figure out a way to raise the children on her own and still receive financial assistance from the state. Robert wanted to know how we could assist this grandmother, given that it appeared that what she really wanted and needed did not exist as a matter of current law and policy in our state.
