Abstract

The goal of antimicrobial therapy is to clear the tissues of the infecting organisms. This requires that (1) the organism be susceptible to concentrations of the antimicrobial agent at the site of infection, (2) the dose and route of administration of the drug result in adequate drug levels at the site of infection for a sufficient period before the next dose is given, (3) local factors at the site of infection do not interfere with the activity of the antimicrobial agent, (4) host defenses be present that aid microbial clearance, and (5) adjunctive therapies such as drainage of abscesses or relief of obstructed excretory sites be used when necessary.
