Abstract
Dr. Steven Brindle of English Heritage gave a talk to the History Study Group on his research which revealed the existence of a forgotten Brunel bridge. For many years there has been a running debate about who designed Paddington Station, and in particular the relative contributions of Isambard Brunel and Matthew Digby Wyatt, nominally engineer and architect respectively. Dr Stephen Brindle, an architectural historian and now English Heritage Inspector of Ancient Monuments for the London area, has researched the genesis of the station with admirable thoroughness and, from a variety of sources, has identified sufficient information to give, for the first time, a clear understanding of how the design developed.
