Personal Sociology: Making a Case for the Autobiographical Voice
Sociological viewpoints, Vol.4(2), pp.1-30
01 Oct 1988
Abstract
A rare form of communication in sociology, the first-person autobiographical essay, can promote both sociological & personal insights. "Personal sociology" is defended here as a means to engage students, to correct an impression of sociologists as truncated beings with no past, & to enhance the humanist moorings of the discipline. Personal experiences are often viewed as sources of bias rather than as resources for understanding. Autobiography pitfalls to avoid include sentimentalism & lack of focus. Early & contemporary efforts in sociological autobiography are noted. A. Waters
