Perturbation theory and the few-nucleon system

Abstract
Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory is used to study the three- and four-nucleon systems in which nucleons are assumed to interact via pairwise central Gaussian potentials with and without repulsive soft cores. The perturbational procedure is started off by replacing each effective nucleon-nucleon interaction by a harmonic oscillator, whose angular frequency is varied to achieve “maximum” convergence of the energy eigenvalue to third order. The efficiency and accuracy of this approach are shown by a direct comparison of our results and those obtained by variational methods in the evaluation of the binding energy, r.m.s. radius.
