Preparing Policing for the Predictive Analytics Future
2017
Abstract
Advanced computer algorithms are already being used to forecast all kinds of human behaviour. From purchasing decisions made in the supermarket to the safety (or lack thereof) of new teenaged drivers, predictive analytics are now a common part of everyday life. These
tools allow countless businesses to make decisions based on often startlingly accurate predictions of future events, and to produce these forecasts in a manner that is consistent, evidence-based, and that—at least at first glance—appears to be objective and free from the
biases of human decision-makers. That predictive analytics present enormous potential value to policing seems abundantly clear. It also seems equally certain that these techniques will eventually enter into everyday use within most police agencies, especially those challenged
by reduced governmental funding.
