Abstract

Courts Criminal law Evaluation Mental health Models Studies
Pretrial forensic evaluations are provided for the criminal courts across the US. Basic models of service delivery are: 1. institution-based, inpatient model, 2. institution-based, outpatient model, 3. community-based, outpatient model, 4. community-based, private practitioner model, and 5. mixed models. There are a number of factors that mental health administrators should consider when comparing the various models of forensic evaluation, including: 1. costs, 2. geography-population distribution, 3. the number of evaluations, and 4. training and quality assurance. Four broad areas for inclusion in forensic examiner training are recommended: 1. law and legal system, 2. the nature of forensic assessment, 3. specialized instruments and procedures, and 4. report writing and testimony. Successful programs may depend as much upon the particular professionals involved as the program structure. The operation of a successful program may be difficult in the absence of persons who are committed to and familiar with the forensic evaluation process.
