Abstract
The legacy of the Tuskegee study, conducted from 1932 to 1972, continues to impede the efforts of public health programs. Clear evidence of the effects of the Tuskegee study was found in the Summer of Service (SOS) program in Philadelphia during the summer of 1993. This SOS program focused on childhood immunization, specifically in African-American communities. Barriers to the project are described, along with the responses initiated to directly respond to the communityʼs fears. The need for the Tuskegee study to be discussed openly is emphasized.
