Abstract
The Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), a national cooperative clinical trial study group, was formed in 1969 for the purpose of conducting research in radiation oncology. The organization of the group began with a multi-institutional trial conducted in 11 institutions to study the value of methotrexate combined with radiation therapy and surgery in the management of patients with advanced head and neck cancer. This study represented a milestone in interdisciplinary clinical efforts; over 700 patients were accessioned to the study and ultimately formed the baseline for many of the clinical investigations in the area of head and neck cancer. The end results from radiation therapy alone, with or without chemotherapy, have laid the foundation upon which salvage surgery can increase the potential for cure.At present there are 25 full member institutions and three provisional member institutions participating in a variety of nonrandomized and randomized clinical trials among 75 hospitals
