Reduction of the Maxwell-Bloch equations to a standard form
Optics communications, v 71(1), pp 85-91
1989
Abstract
A systematic procedure is presented for reducing the coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations to a set of coupled cavity mode equations to any desired level of numerical accuracy. This procedure dependes on a careful analysis of the intrinsic length scale and time scale ratios. It is illustrated by application to the CO
2 laser. To order λ/
L, the Maxwell-Bloch equations reduce to three sets of coupled equations for the two large electric field amplitudes, two polarization amplitudes and three population inversion field amplitudes. These equations are expressed in elegant spinor-vector form. The form of these equations is independent of mode selection mechanisms and covers a wide range of cavity shape parameters.
