Abstract
Reviews the book, System and Structure: Essays in Communication and Exchange. 2nd ed by Anthony Wilden (1980). In his introduction to the second edition, Wilden describes System and Structure as an attempt to understand the ideological and epistemological "deep structures" that unite and underlie the diverse disciplines of modern academic knowledge. Wilden's discussion of these putative structures draws on the conceptual, or at least terminological, resources of many domains: Lacanian psychoanalysis, Bateson's double-bind theory of schizophrenia, structural and ecological anthropology, cybernetics and systems theory, linguistics and semiotics, mathematical logic, Marxian dialectics, ecological biology, and others.
