Abstract
Purpose of Review
This narrative review highlights the transformative potential of telemedicine in pediatric emergency care, showing its roles, applications, benefits, and challenges. The integration of telehealth technologies into pediatric emergency departments (PEDs) can revolutionize the delivery of care, making it more accessible, equitable, and efficient.
Recent Findings
The review discussed multiple potential roles and applications of telehealth in pediatric emergency care, including tele-triage, remote diagnosis, and follow-up care. The use of telemedicine has been used to enhance care equity, reduce non-urgent emergency department visits, and improve patient satisfaction. However, significant barriers (including inadequate technological infrastructure, regulatory obstacles, and insufficient provider training) must be effectively addressed to enable widespread implementation.
Summary
Telemedicine is a valuable innovation in pediatric emergency care, offering the potential to improve access to immediate, high-quality care while reducing the time and costs associated with emergency department visits. By addressing the current barriers to its implementation and using its advantages, telemedicine can enhance care equity and bridge gaps in healthcare access among underprivileged groups. Our review highlighted the potential roles, applications, and benefits of telehealth in pediatric emergency settings, as well as the significant challenges that must be overcome. Continuous efforts are needed to expand telemedicine infrastructure, particularly in rural and low-resource areas, to ensure fair healthcare access for all children. By addressing these challenges and building on the strengths of telemedicine, we can create a more efficient, fair, and effective pediatric emergency care system.
