Abstract
The constant need to maximize athletic performance leads to continuous efforts to better understand factors that predict coaching success. Due to the multifaceted demands of coaching, multiple evaluation criteria has been used to evaluate coaching effectiveness. A clearer understanding is needed of the processes, knowledge and behaviors involved in coaching effectiveness and success (Côté & Gilbert, 2009). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between coaching and athletic experience and self-reflection as potential predictors of coaching success. Participants included 153 rowing coaches with average rowing experience of 13 years. Correlational analysis results revealed rowing coaching and athletic experiences related positively with coaching success. In addition, correlational analysis results indicated that coaching success was positively albeit weakly related to self-reflection. Multiple regression analysis identified only rowing coaching experience as a positive predictor of coaching success. Despite these findings, these factors alone may not guarantee coaching success.
