Abstract
Personality and attitudes have been shown to be associated with making online purchases (Yang, Lo, & Lester, 2003), and Yang and Lester (2006) found that buying and selling items on eBay was associated with having computer and Internet skills. The present study explored whether other personality traits and attitudes toward money were associated with the use of eBay.
Sixty-four women and 38 men (M-age=21.0 yr., SD=3.9), all undergraduates enrolled in psychology courses at a state college, were given Rotter's locus of control scale (1966), Yamauchi and Templer's Money Attitude Scale (1982), using subscales measuring power-prestige, retention-time, distrust, and anxiety, a competitiveness scale (Smith & Houston, 1992), and six questions concerning the extent and frequency of use of eBay for buying and selling items. Means and standard deviations were for external locus of control 12.1 +/- 3.2, lower prestige 22.5 +/- 8.7, retention time 26.2 +/- 8.4, distrust 22.9 +/- 6.6, anxiety 23.0 +/- 5.4, and use of eBay 8.3 +/- 4.3.
No correlations were statistically significant, either for the six individual eBay usage items or the sum of scores on these six items (Pearson rs ranged from -.01 to.09) or for the men and women separately. In this sample, then, personality traits and attitudes were not associated with frequency of use of eBay but men were more likely to use eBay than women (r(pb) =.24, two-tailed p <.05).
