Abstract
The influence of composition on the mechanical properties of SiC-TiB sub 2 ceramics has been investigated. Ceramics were obtained by low-cost, non-vacuum hot pressing. It was shown that mechanical properties of ceramics have a maximum at 20-30 vol.% of the boride phase. A significant improvement of strength and fracture toughness was achieved. Experimental results are in agreement with theoretical ones, obtained using a fracture toughness model that accounts for the residual stress redistribution between a composite's components.
