Abstract

Dimethyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, and sulfur dioxide were measured in the boundary layer and troposphere over the southern Pacific Ocean. SO sub(2) levels were typically under 100 ppt and highly variable, with no correlation with geographic location or altitude. A boundary layer concentration range of 10 200 ppt was documented for dimethyl sulfide. The highest concentrations were detected in the equatorial region of the southern hemisphere. Several boundary layer samples contained all three species in the region of the Fiji Islands.
