Abstract
INTRODUCTION:With the advent of smart phones and texting, have the preferences of many patients changed with respect to how they want to communicate with their physician? A survey was given to postpartum patients to determine which mode of communication they would favor to use when communicating with physicians during the antenatal period.
METHODS:A 10-question survey regardingage, parity, gestational age at delivery, daily access to e-mail, texting, or both, comfort with communicating via e-mail or text for questions and test results, and willingness to pay for an e-mail or text service, was given to postpartum patients after delivery.
RESULTS:One hundred one surveys were completed. The mean age of the patients was 30 years. Ninety-five percent of patients had access to daily e-mail. Ninety-seven percent were able to send text messages from her phone. Sixty-six percent would like to receive laboratory results by e-mail, and 70% would like to ask questions via e-mail. Sixty-nine percent of patients would feel comfortable texting her physician nonurgent questions. A total of 26.7% would have been willing to pay for a text or e-mail service.
CONCLUSIONS:The majority of patients would like to have an open dialog electronically with their physician, thus improving patient satisfaction. Other areas of research include physician communication preferences and how electronic communication would comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
