Abstract
The Texas kangaroo rat (Dipodomys elator) has a limited distribution within the state of Texas and is listed as a state threatened species. It is currently under review by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Only a small amount of land within D. elator's range is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Surveys were conducted in Copper Breaks State Park (Copper Breaks SP), Hardeman County, Texas where the Texas kangaroo rat had previously been reported. Mammals were live-trapped and released at eight localities over 5127 trapnights within the park and at one site outside the park where two D. elator were captured. No Texas kangaroo rats were obtained in Copper Breaks SP. Vegetation on a centralized trapping grid within Copper Breaks SP and at a D. elator capture site outside, but near the park, was quantified and compared. Vegetation within most areas of Copper Breaks may be too dense to support viable populations of the Texas kangaroo rat.
