Abstract
There is a paucity of research on health promoting behaviors and the use of adult day services (ADS) among dementia family caregivers. Using baseline data from the Care of Persons with Dementia in their Environment (COPE) study, the aim of this study was to examine the association between the use of ADS and scheduled health appointments among 223 dementia family caregivers with a chronic condition. Scheduled health appointments were based on caregivers who reported missing a doctor’s appointment in the past six months. Twenty-seven percent of the caregivers missed a scheduled appointment. Further, caregivers who used adult day service had a decreased odds (OR: 0.50, 95% CI: 0.25–0.98) for missing an appointment compared do those who did not use ADS, controlling for age, race, education, marital status, employment status, social support, and caregiver burden. These findings suggest the need for ADS programs to encourage health-promoting behaviors among dementia family caregivers.
