Abstract
TRENDING DESIGN Makerspaces designed for collaborative engineering education are appearing on campuses throughout the United States: * At the University of California, Berkeley's College of Engineering, the 24,000-square-foot Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation is a team-based educational space open to undergraduates from any discipline. * Wayne State University's 38,000-square-foot Innovation Institute is the College of Engineering's think tank for medical technology. Movable equipment and furniture allow for easy reconfiguration of the open space. * At Rice University's 12,000-square-foot Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen, undergraduates in every engineering discipline learn to design, prototype, and deploy group projects with real-world applications. * Stanford University's Hasso Plattner Institute of Design is an expansive 47,000-square-foot makerspace and classroom building in which graduate students are challenged to design solutions to real problems. * The Rochester Institute of Technology's Student Innovation Hall is a 10,000-square-foot, 1.5-story glass and steel drum that houses the Simone Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, designed for the dual purposes of educating students and hosting social events. In particular, the engineering graduate population has expanded, resulting in the growth of research activity, technology transfer, and economic opportunities through the Close School of Entrepreneurship, Drexel Ventures, and the new Office of Corporate Relations and Economic Development. An associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the ExCITe (Expressive and Creative Interaction Technologies) Center, Kim studies the digital media technologies that will shape the future of music and entertainment (figure 11).
