Abstract
The use of the chain saw as a hand-held tool commonly found in US households poses a significant potential for consumer injury, particularly with respect to the phenomenon of "kickback." Two years after the kickback hazard became a concern of the CPSC, The Chain Saw Project of 1979 was initiated. Its failure and ways to improve it are discussed.
