Abstract
Problems that cause relatively minor inconvenience for the general population may produce serious dysfunction or disability in the performing artist. Woodwind, brass, and vocal instrumentalists require effective, well-controlled abdominal and pulmonary function in order to sustain tones of constant quality and pitch. Respiratory defects may lead to adverse changes in performance technique compensatory hyperfunction, and possible dystonias that impair or prohibit performance. Review of the principles responsible for this association should lead to increased clinical awareness of subtle respiratory maladies, early diagnosis, and better care for performing artists.
