Abstract
The past 18 months have seen an unusual amount of new activity by international entities concerned with the legal and commercial aspects of electronic data interchange (EDI) and related technologies. A report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law addressed issues that include: 1. the legal value of computer records as evidence, 2. the application of the requirements of a writing in the electronic environment, and 3. authentication of electronic transmissions. The International Chamber of Commerce's Uniform Rules of Conduct for Interchange of Trade Data by Teletransmission was a major step in the development of a legal framework for EDI. The Commission of the European Communities has given great attention to the advantages of EDI. Other entities currently examining EDI procedures include the United Nations Working Party on the Facilitation of International Trade Procedures and the American Bar Association's Business Law Subcommittee on Electronic Commercial Practices.
