The System Bites Back: Politics, Parallel Process, and the Notion of Change
Therapeutic communities, Vol.26(4), pp.337-354
Dec 2005
Abstract
In this paper the author weaves together her personal experiences of creating a trauma-sensitive therapeutic milieu based on therapeutic community principles with the currents of social, political and economic tides that have exerted influence over and interacted with the mental health service delivery system of the US over the past four decades. She uses chaos theory and the insights of Maxwell Jones as a background for illuminating and explaining some of these influences as they affected the life and work of her colleagues and herself.
