The classification of overcontrolled hostility: comparison of two diagnostic methods
Criminal behaviour and mental health, v 5(2), pp 106-123
Jun 1995
Abstract
Two major approaches have been employed in research studies classifying individuals as overcontrolled hostile (O‐H) using the MMPI: (1) MMPI O‐H scale scores and case history information, and (2) statistical cluster analyses of MMPI profiles. This study provides the first empirical comparison of these respective approaches. Subjects were 128 mentally disordered male offenders who had been charged with crimes against persons. Case history and O‐H score, alone and together, and cluster analysis of MMPI clinical scales were used to classify the subjects as overcontrolled. Results suggested that the two methods were similar but not identical in the classification decisions yielded. The ‘controlled’ cluster was composed of both normal and overcontrolled persons, whilst the group clinically classified as overcontrolled based on O‐H score and history was more homogeneous.
