Abstract

In the course of the last 15 years, Japan has risen to a position of global prominence in the field of particle-, fiber-, and whisker-reinforced MMCs for the automotive, electronic, and robotics industries. Japanese MMC-related research efforts are often link reinforcement production with MMC processing, and paying greater attention to the economics of processes or materials developed than do countries with defense- or aerospace-driven research communities. Tabulations are presented of MMC R&D work performed by specific companies as well as by Japanese university and national laboratories. (AIAA)
