Abstract
Within a constantly evolving media landscape, the debate revolving around a contemporary interpretation of the concept of 'public service television' remains topical. Belgian public service televisions today proves an interesting example of the diversity within European PSB today and thus prove a good starting point for both an analysis of the actual variety in policy and content and for more theoretical reflections regarding the future of the concept. VRT and RTBF seem to occupy the poles of a continuum from a cultural educational to an economic competitive media logic. The article demonstrates this by analysing the structure, functioning, policy, programming and content of both broadcasters that where once one and the same institute but that have evolved under the influence of, on the one band, European trends in technological, economic, political and socio cultural nature and, on the other hand, Belgian specifics. The analysis fuels a more theoretical discussion.
