Abstract

Complex compounds of the types (CrCl 3) 3L 2·18H 2O, (MnCl 2) 3L 2·H 2O, FeCl 3L·2H 2O, CoCl 2L 3·6H 2O, (CuCl 2) 3L 2, (CuCl 2) 2L 3·2H 2O and ZnCl 2L 2·H 2O with phenazine 5-oxide(L) as ligand were prepared by interaction of predried solutions of L and metal chloride. The new metal complexes were characterized by means of their IR and electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III) and Cu(II) complexes appear to be polynuclear, comprising bridging L(O- or O,N-bonded) or Cl ligands. Both Cu(II) complexes are characterized by subnormal magnetic moments, which were attributed to spin-spin coupling, occurring by a superexchange mechanism, operating through the orbitals of the bridging oxygen atoms (CuO 2Cu bridges, involving O-bonded bridging L groups). The Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes are apparently monomeric, involving both N- and O-bonded L ligands.
