Abstract

Antisocial Personality Disorder Hospitals Human Mental Disorders Mentally Ill Offenders Psychopathology
Reviews the book, Sentenced to Hospital: Offenders in Broadmoor by Susanne Dell and Graham Robertson (see record 1988-98380-000). The study on which this book is based was performed over a two-year period with two patient cohorts: men admitted to Broadmoor as mentally ill and a matched sample of men admitted as having psychopathic disorder. The present samples represent a cross-section of English offenders who have been convicted and sentenced by the court to Broadmoor. This may stem from the court's finding of either a mental illness or a psychopathic disorder. It does mean, however, that it is not possible to directly compare the present findings with much of the research done on patients in other categories. This book offers a great deal to anyone interested in mentally disordered offenders and their treatment. Although Dell and Robertson cite virtually none of the North American research on such offenders and also describe patients in different legal categories, one is struck by recurring themes. The coexistence of security and treatment concerns, the need to assess risk for subsequent violent behavior, and the compelling need for treatment models that address both psychopathology and violence risk are all seen.
