Trying out sanctuary the hard way

Abstract
Describes the personal experience of Bills in introducing a sanctuary model of treatment into a regressed and violent state hospital ward. When the experiment began, the ward averaged 100 reported violent incidents per month. By a year later, the number of violent incidents had been dramatically decreased using trauma-based therapeutic milieu principles. Within 2 years, 75% of the patients had been re-diagnosed and only 2 of the original patients remained hospitalized. (Original abstract - amended)
