Understanding Protozoa in Your Watershed

Abstract
When previously published monitoring studies suggested that a watershed like that used for Philadelphia, PA, would have significantly high occurrences of protozoa, the Philadelphia Water Department challenged this observation and sought to document the behavior of protozoa in their source water. Data were then collected on the occurrences of Cryptosporidium and Giardia. The resulting data suggested that wastewater might be a significant source of protozoa in only one of the tributaries, but other sources could not be ruled out. A tiered sampling program was then designed, which is described. The subsequent data suggested that, without additional watershed- or site-specific information, the behavior and occurrence of protozoa could not be based solely on general watershed type for water-quality regulatory requirements.
