Abstract
To the Editor. —Most otolaryngologists have a diagnostic fiberoptic set up in the office to view the upper respiratory area. I have found that using an "off the shelf" mini-camcorder (VHS) with a color monitor provides a relatively inexpensive set up that produces satisfactory viewing of the upper respiratory area. Photographs of findings can be taken easily using a Polaroid camera. The caliber of the photographs is satisfactory.Pathologic findings can be viewed and explained to patients using a 9-in color monitor. Pathologic features of the ear such as polyps and perforations can also be viewed.After using the above set up for several years and demonstrating it to several colleagues who have duplicated the set up in their offices, I thought your readers would be interested.The cost of the equipment is approximately one tenth of those displayed at our conventions.
