Abstract
This article describes the assessment process and student outcomes associated with participation in an interprofessional education (IPE) experience. Data were collected from students, faculty, and standardized actors. The experience was offered for three semesters to healthcare administration, clinical, and public health students. Student reactions to the experience, achievement of the learning objectives, and interprofessional behaviors were assessed using a mixed-methods approach. Students reported the experience as worthwhile and that it enhanced their understanding of interprofessional concepts; however, the design of the IPE activity introduced barriers to collaboration between degree programs. Student reflections emphasized the role of soft skills, effective teamwork, and hospital policies as influences on interprofessional team outcomes. Faculty assessment of student competency validated student achievement of the learning outcomes. Standardized actor assessments showed that IPE teams demonstrated professionalism during the encounter but struggled to resolve conflicts "in the moment." This research demonstrates the value of integrating indirect and direct assessment of student learning. Both student learning results and validated assessments are needed to gauge progress toward IPE and interprofessional practice goals.
