Using the latex peel method to collect and cast a Late Devonian lungfish from the Catskill Formation in Pennsylvania

May 2004
Abstract
The partial skull roof of a lungfish was collected in 2001 along with other Late Devonian vertebrate fossils from a road construction site along Route 15, north of Mansfield, in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The fossil material is from undifferentiated Catskill Formation and is only the second report of lungfish skull material from this unit. The lungfish specimen could not be collected as a body fossil so a latex peel of the natural mold was made in the field and a polyester resin cast of the latex peel was subsequently made in the lab. The procedures for making the latex peel and polyester cast are described herein, along with a brief discussion of the phylogenetic affinites of the lungfish specimen.
