Abstract
Water quality is threatened throughout the US. The increasing human population, intensive resource consumption and degradation, and natural and human-induced climate change all threaten the future of our water resources. The American Association for the Advancement of Science conference proceedings aptly state: 'Humans have emerged as a new force of nature. We are modifying physical, chemical, and biological systems in new ways, at faster rates, and over larger spatial scales than ever recorded on Earth'.
