Abstract
The most recent amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act implemented a range of requirements for the filtration and disinfection of waters derived from surface sources, including the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR). The SWTR includes specific filtration and disinfection requirements for public drinking water systems. The US EPA's contact-time tables for water disinfection were created using survival data derived using buffered demand-free water. Results from tests conducted at Drexel University indicate that the selection of source water can have a profound influence on the level of inactivation achieved with any given treatment option. The sources of these discrepancies are identified using advanced disinfection kinetic models and statistical tests.
