Abstract

Human Intervention Professional Supervision Sociocultural Factors Training Trauma-Informed Care Mental Health Mental Health Services
Trauma-informed care is increasingly recognized as essential in mental health and helping professions; yet trauma-informed supervision (TIS) remains underexplored. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review to map the current knowledge about TIS in the extant literature. The scoping review search was limited to 2003–2023. An initial sample of 666 documents were retrieved and 28 documents were retained for data analysis after data cleaning. Seven key themes emerged from the scoping review on the extant literature on TIS: (a) types of publications; (b) timeline of publications; (c) defining and operationalizing TIS; (d) broad, multidisciplinary conceptualization and applications to TIS; (e) utilization of preexisting frameworks for conceptualizing and applying to TIS; (f) seven common components of TIS; and (g) sociocultural considerations in TIS. Findings highlight the need for further empirical work to develop validated measures, training protocols, and interventions that support the standardization of TIS practices across diverse mental health settings.
