Abstract
A trauma model of abuse is advocated & the current backlash against accusations of sexual abuse, repressed memories, & psychotherapy is discussed as part of a larger backlash movement that targets feminism, environmentalism, the poor, racial minorities, & the facts of the Holocaust. This backlash seeks to destroy memory & stop any challenges to the status quo. It resists admitting serious problems & making the transition from identification with the perpetrator to identification with the victim, which is both a personal & political choice. The trauma model of abuse makes this choice. It refutes the mind-body dichotomy, redefines ill as injured & many irrational behaviors as normal reactions to abnormal stress. The trauma model questions individual rights disconnected from social responsibility (eg, child pornography), but emphasizes protection over punishment. It brings to light our "dirty little secret" of male violence & dominance, but offers the opportunity to overcome our traumatic social evolution. 43 References. E. Blackwell
