International journal of the sociology of language, v 1987(67), 145
01 Jan 1987
Abstract
Discussion of the history & present status of Yiddish use in a South Philadelphia (Pa) Jewish neighborhood, based on personal histories obtained from several residents, & interviews with 30 Ss aged 60+; all Ss understood Yiddish, & most could speak it at least to some degree. Analysis indicates that most Ss feel that Yiddish constitutes an important element in their lives. Residents of this neighborhood have a positive attitude toward Yiddish, although the connection has not for the most part been maintained by their children or other second- & third-generation immigrants. In general, Yiddish is a lang of intimate personal contact, being no longer widely used in social contexts such as the synagogue or social club. 54 References. B. Annesser Murray
